Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

The school's ethos is grounded in the Benedictine values of serving each other, tolerating differences and living harmoniously as a community. Service and stewardship are placed at least as much emphasis as academic achievement. The Christian Living programme (replacing PSHE) is popular with pupils. The school motto is 'A Compass for Life'.

teaching

An ambitious curriculum stretches pupils and results are described as good, though the school takes a holistic attitude to achievement with no sense of an academic hierarchy. Each child's gifts and talents are nurtured individually. All pupils follow the school's own Christian Living programme in lieu of PSHE, which is reportedly popular. A Learning Hub supports pupils and teachers, and any child can visit for help at any time. The library offers space for quiet study or collaborative work. Sixth-formers choose from 25 A-level subjects, including ancient history, Christian theology and business studies. BTecs are offered in countryside management, enterprise and entrepreneurship, sport, and

pastoral

There is a strong emphasis on pastoral care following safeguarding issues raised in recent years. Every pupil has a personal tutor, and support is also available from housemasters/mistresses and matrons. There is now a complete administrative and physical separation between the school and the abbey, demarcated by a fence, with a robust visitor policy, security personnel and CCTV monitoring. Parents are regarded as part of the school family and are always welcome; each year group has a designated Parents' Day running from Friday night to Sunday Mass. The Old Amplefordian (OA) community is described as strong.
