Jargon buster for parents

Plain-English explanations of the independent-school terms parents meet during search, admissions, fees, and offers.

  • Admissions language is often precise but not parent-friendly.
  • Knowing the terms helps you ask sharper questions.
  • When in doubt, ask the school what the term means in their process.

Admissions terms

Registration is the formal expression of interest, usually with a fee. Assessment is the exam, interview, activity day, or portfolio stage. An offer is a place; acceptance is your commitment to take it.

  • Occasional place: a vacancy outside the usual entry point
  • Waiting list: a ranked or pooled list after offers
  • Reply-by date: the deadline to accept or decline
  • Acceptance deposit: a payment that confirms your place

School types

Pre-prep usually covers early years to Year 2. Prep often runs to Year 6 or Year 8. Senior school usually starts at 11+ or 13+. Sixth form is Years 12 and 13.

Money terms

A scholarship is usually merit-based. A bursary is means-tested. A sibling discount reduces fees for additional children. Extras are charges beyond core tuition.

If a phrase is unclear, ask whether it changes the actual amount you pay, the deadline you face, or the evidence you need to provide.
