Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

Ben Figgis has led Ardingly College for 10 years, building a trusting, warm and family-orientated community. His World Ready Programme aims to lift pupils' horizons and develop good global citizens. In September 2026 he will move to lead Munich International School; Alastair Tighe, currently head of Wells Cathedral School, will succeed him. The school is described as honouring traditions while continuously looking forward.

teaching

The academic curriculum centres on the values-driven World Ready programme, which includes weekly sessions developing workplace skills such as collaboration, and classes on society and difference. From Year 7, pupils are streamed in maths, science and some languages; all other subjects are taught in mixed-ability groups. Most work is carried out on devices rather than paper. A-level performance over recent years has been the best since records began. The school offers a broad range of IB (popular among European students), A-level and BTec courses (in psychology, business and sport). STEAM subjects are very popular; the science block and D&T workshops are described as state-of-the-art. Nearly

pastoral

Pupils may choose full, weekly or flexi boarding (three nights per week). All boarding houses are within five minutes' walk of the main school building and are described as modern, light and spacious. The co-ed upper-sixth house Godwin Hall has a large basement with common rooms, pool tables and a kitchen. Weekly and flexi boarding is mainly taken by UK pupils; international students form the main full-boarding cohort. Weekends have a packed schedule of socials and outings for boarders who stay in.
