Reports and complaints
Last updated: 8 October 2026
In short
- Anyone can report content on Houseroom, with or without an account, using the Report link next to it or our report form.
- A person reads every report. Reports about a risk to a child or someone's safety go first.
- If content is illegal or breaks our rules, we take it down quickly.
- You can complain about us, or appeal a decision about your content or account.
1. What this covers
Parents and schools can post on Houseroom: forum threads and replies, questions and answers, reviews of schools, clubs, tutors and advisers, tutor and adviser profiles, uniform and kit exchange listings, and content schools add to their own pages. This page explains how to tell us about a problem with any of it, and what we do next. It is part of our terms of use and sits alongside our house rules.
2. What you can report or complain about
- Content you think is illegal, for example a risk to a child, threats, hate, fraud or scams, or the sale of illegal items.
- Content that breaks our house rules or terms, such as a fake review, spam or someone's personal information.
- Content that was taken down, or an account that was restricted, when you think it should not have been (an appeal).
- Content that we have wrongly treated as harmful or illegal, or a warning that was applied wrongly.
- How we have handled a report, or how we are meeting our duties to keep people safe online.
3. How to report
- Use the Report link next to the post, review, answer, profile or listing.
- Or use the report form and paste a link to the content.
- Or email support@houseroom.uk with "Report" in the subject line.
You don't need an account. If you give us your email address we will tell you what we decided. Please don't send us sexual images of children or other illegal material; describe it and send the link.
4. What happens next
- A person at Houseroom reads your report. We do not use automated tools to decide reports.
- We look at reports about a risk to a child, terrorism or violence, suicide or self-harm, and sexual images first, and aim to act on them the same day. We aim to review every other report within two working days.
- If the content is illegal or breaks our rules, we take it down. We hide it from everyone rather than delete it, so that we keep a record and can put it back if a decision is overturned.
- Where the law requires it, or a child may be at risk, we report it to the police or the right body. We keep a record of every report and decision.
- If you gave us a way to contact you, we tell you what we decided. If you would rather not hear from us about it, say so in your report, or reply to our email, and we will stop.
5. Appeals
If we took down something you posted, restricted your account, or didn't act on your report, you can appeal. A different person from the one who made the first decision will look at it again, and we aim to reply within five working days. If we find we were wrong, we put the content back or lift the restriction, and tell you.
6. Complaints about us
To complain about how we handled a report, or about how we keep Houseroom safe, use the complaint form or email support@houseroom.uk. We aim to reply within five working days. If you are unhappy with our reply, you can tell Ofcom, the UK online safety regulator, through its complaints page. Ofcom does not decide individual complaints but uses them to check how services are doing.
