Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

New head Jeremy Quartermain arrived in September 2025 from Rossall School in Lancashire. A historian by background, he previously held senior roles at Gresham's and Brentwood. He is open that Bradfield is 'not a grand school' and that 'we don't do entitlement'. He is ambitious for pupils and the school, with warmth behind the drive; his happiest moments are in boarding houses or on the touchline. He plans to teach history to stay connected to the classroom.

teaching

Academic culture has shifted noticeably in recent years – teaching is described as alive and collaborative, full of curiosity and reflection. A new tracking system monitors academic progress alongside wellbeing, enabling tutors to target support precisely. Year 9s follow a distinct curriculum mixing core subjects with tasters such as psychology, history of art and politics. Sixth-formers choose between A-levels and the IB; a BTEC in sports science is under consideration. The new sixth-form centre occupies a converted 14th-century former parish church with individual study booths and a popular café. Pupil- and teacher-led societies include the Minerva lecture series, the Curators' Club and fo

pastoral

Pastoral care is a major focus. Every pupil has one-to-one tutoring each evening. New sixth-form entrants are paired with a pupil buddy who shares a bedroom to ease settling in. A new health and wellbeing centre is planned. In-house catering is described as delicious, fresh and nutritious. Student voice is important, as is open communication with parents, who are regularly invited to the head's house for supper. Many staff have been at the school for decades and many families are second- or third-generation Bradfieldians.
