Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

Head Chris Wolsey took the headship in 2021 having joined in 2007, progressing from head of faculty through head of sixth form to deputy head. He personally interviews every new staff member and has a collegiate leadership style. Oracy—public speaking, debating and ethics—sits at the core of the curriculum as a vehicle for critical thinking and self-confidence. All pupils, including prep-age children, sit on the Pupil Voice council and work with staff on new initiatives.

teaching

Communication and oracy underpin the curriculum; pupils are developed as independent critical thinkers with no spoon-feeding. A new academic mentoring department provides one-to-one and small-group literacy, executive function and study-skills support. In Year 7 pupils study four languages: compulsory French and Latin, plus two chosen from Spanish, German and Mandarin (Ibstock was among the UK's earliest schools to teach Mandarin). An innovation centre features VR/AR devices, a recording studio, green-screen stage and podcasting facilities. Most leavers go to Russell Group universities; a few gain Oxbridge places or head to US or European universities.

pastoral

Pastoral care is proactive and integrated throughout school life. Parents receive daily communications and online support aligned with the PSHE curriculum. A dedicated wellbeing hub has two professional counsellors on site every day; anonymous opinion boxes are placed around school. A four-house system fosters inter-year bonding. The 20-strong Pupil Voice council addresses issues including gender equality, neurodiversity and LGBTQ+ rights. The pastoral team actively monitors social media trends.
