ethos

Dr Richard Maloney has been headmaster since 2016. His philosophy: 'Exams open the door, but it is the person that walks through that makes the difference.' He focuses on long-term institutional planning and ensuring pupils leave as strong communicators. Monday morning whole-school chapel gatherings celebrate achievements and reinforce communal responsibility. The holistic approach established by Edward Thring underpins the school after more than 175 years.

- Small class sizes; Lorne House currently has one class of 15 per year group (two classes per year targeted from September 2026). - First years study up to three languages including Mandarin, with many taking them through to GCSE. - Broad A-level range including business, music technology, textile design and a BTEC in sport. - Sixth-formers also pursue a 'parallel' curriculum: EPQ, sports leadership qualification, maths AS or French diploma. - Art facilities (Leonardo Centre) cover ceramics, photography, graphic design and fashion; world-class science centre has a roof garden and hi-tech telescopes. - Oxbridge is not the holy grail; 10–15 pupils a year gain university places abroad via a gl

pastoral

- Pastoral care taken very seriously: support network includes matrons, counsellors, psychologists, nurses (Woodfield Health Centre) and house staff. - Each house has two student Wellbeing Advocates. - Years 9 and 10 have weekly wellbeing lessons covering health, personal and social education. - Sixth formers participate in the RiseUpp lecture programme (fortnightly prestigious speakers). - Chapel is central to community life; the Victorian chapel is at the heart of the school and is hugely popular. - Rules are clear; pupils may go into town after lessons, with freedom increasing by year group. - Pupils come predominantly from along the A1 corridor (Scotland, Yorkshire, East Anglia); London
