Why parents will choose Houseroom Tutors
Tutors who know the test, the school and the deadline
School entrance: 7+, 8+, 11+ and 13+
Prepared for the school, not just the stage. Houseroom records how schools assess entry, from their own papers to tests such as the ISEB Common Pre-Test, and when registration closes. Your tutor will know it too.
GCSE, IGCSE, A Level and IB
Specialists matched to your child's exam board, not just the subject.
University entrance
Admissions tests such as UCAT, LNAT, TMUA and ESAT, plus personal statements and interviews, with tutors who know the current format.
How it works
Three steps to the right tutor
- 1
Tell us about your child
Their stage, the subject and the schools you're aiming for, from 7+ preparation to A Level grades.
- 2
We suggest tutors who fit
A person matches by stage and target school, using Houseroom's school data. You see each tutor's experience and rate before you choose.
- 3
Start lessons, with support
Online or in person. If it isn't working, tell us and we'll suggest someone new.
How we vet tutors
Fewer tutors, chosen with care
Our bar: the top 5% of tutors who apply. Every tutor will meet this standard before a family sees them.
We’ll publish our acceptance rate once there are enough applications for it to mean something.
- 1ApplicationWith proof of degree and teaching experience, read by a person.
- 2Subject assessmentA live subject assessment or sample lesson, reviewed by a specialist.
- 3ChecksAn enhanced DBS check, an identity check and two references.
- 4InterviewCovering safeguarding and the schools they prepare children for.
- 5Ongoing reviewsRegular reviews from parent feedback, so the standard holds after someone joins.

Education consultants
Not sure which school, or which entry point?
Our education consultants work with you on shortlisting, timelines and applications, backed by the same school data. One place for choosing the school and preparing for it.
Why we’re building this
The question parents ask us next
Houseroom began as a clear view of UK independent schools: fees, entry tests, open days and deadlines in one place. Once families knew where they were applying, the next question was nearly always the same. Who can help my child prepare?
Good tutors are found by word of mouth and are hard to check. We want families to have a short list of tutors who have been properly vetted, chosen by people who know the schools, and a person to call if it isn’t working.
For tutors and consultants
Teach the families who value it
You set your rate. You choose your hours, online or in person. We send you families who are a good fit, matched by stage and target school. It’s a small network, so your profile stands out.
Applications are reviewed by a person and take about five minutes.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How much will it cost?
Rates are set per tutor and shown before you book. We'll publish typical ranges at launch. Joining the waitlist is free.
Will tutors prepare my child for pre-tests such as the ISEB Common Pre-Test or UKiset?
Yes. We'll match you with tutors who prepare children for the test your target school sets. Houseroom's school pages already record each school's entry points and admissions dates, and how it assesses entry where the school publishes it.
Is tutoring online or in person?
Both. In person depends on where you live, and we'll be clear about which tutors are near you.
How does matching work?
You tell us your child's stage, the subject and the schools you're aiming for. A person suggests tutors who fit, using what Houseroom knows about those schools, and you choose who to try.
How do you keep children safe?
Every tutor has an enhanced DBS check, an identity check, two references and an interview that covers safeguarding. Houseroom Tutors will have a named safeguarding lead you can contact.
What if it isn't working?
Tell us and we'll suggest someone new.
When does Houseroom Tutors launch?
We haven't set a date. We'll open each stage once we have enough vetted tutors for it, and we'll email everyone on the waitlist for that stage when it opens.
How are education consultants different from tutors?
Tutors teach a subject or prepare a child for an entry test. Education consultants help with the bigger decisions: shortlisting schools, choosing an entry point, timelines and applications, boarding, moving from abroad and SEN placements.
