Our take

Independent boys senior school in Richmond upon Thames for ages 11–18. Selective entry.

Best for
Who thrives here
  • Families seeking a senior school for ages 11–18, with thinking already on 11+ or 13+ entry.
  • Parents who want a single-sex environment for their son.
  • Children who can demonstrate strong academics at entry assessment — this is a selective school.
Watch-outs
Know before applying
  • Selective entry — assume some form of assessment at the relevant entry point. Plan tutoring or familiarisation early if needed.
  • Single-sex (boys). Comfortable for some children, less so for others — worth a visit on a normal teaching day rather than only an open-day showcase.

Academic reputation — parent discussion
Academic reputation — parent discussion

Academically, the pace is fast, and the school is quite open about that, the Head often compares it to a “peloton race.” If your son keeps up, it’s great, but if he falls behind, there’s less built-in support, and many families turn to private tutors, particularly for maths and...

Pastoral care — parent discussion

OP your boy will find his tribe there. There are plenty of lovely neurodiverse (or not necessarily neurodiverse but certainly on the geeky side of neurotypical) boys at Hampton who love tech, coding and art! My own older DS is very much one of these! My younger one is more...

Wellbeing

Hampton regards the moral and spiritual development of its pupils as central in preparing them to be responsible and fulfilled members of society. The school's pastoral care is described as a 'pastoral paradise' with a caring and nurturing approach. A sense of mutual support and camaraderie is a defining feature of Hampton life, with kindness at the heart of the community. Boys are supported by form tutors, school nurses, counselling services, and prefects and mentors, with a strong emphasis on well-being.
